Pool Gateway Seal

US Patent:
4375104, Feb 22, 1983
Filed:
Aug 20, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/068191
Inventors:
James A. Starr - San Jose CA
Leopold A. Steinert - San Jose CA
Assignee:
General Electric Company - San Jose CA
International Classification:
G21C 1302
G21D 102
US Classification:
376203
Abstract:
A device for sealing a gateway between interconnectable pools in a nuclear facility comprising a frame supporting a liquid impermeable sheet positioned in a U-shaped gateway between the pools. An inflatable tube carried in a channel in the periphery of the frame and adjoining the gateway provides a seal therebetween when inflated. A restraining arrangement on the bottom edge of the frame is releasably engagable with an adjacent portion of the gateway to restrict the movement of the frame in the U-shaped gateway upon inflation of the tube, thereby enhancing the seal. The impermeable sheet is formed of an elastomer and thus is conformable to a liquid permeable supportive wall upon application of liquid pressure to the side of the sheet opposite the wall.

Methods For Temperature-Compensated Liquid Height And Leak Detection Measurements Using Quasi-Static Reference Subsystem

US Patent:
5263371, Nov 23, 1993
Filed:
Jan 30, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/830229
Inventors:
Joseph W. Maresca - Sunnyvale CA
James W. Starr - Bound Brook NJ
Christopher P. Wilson - La Honda CA
International Classification:
G01F 2328
US Classification:
73290V
Abstract:
A method for measuring the temperature-compensated change in the height of a surface of a liquid. The method positions an acoustic signal transducer for emitting and receiving acoustic signals below the surface of the liquid, positions a quasi-static reference device with a fiducial such that the fiducial lies within a predetermined range below the surface of the liquid, and positions one or more fiducials below the surface of the liquid to establish points separated by known distances. The transducer emits acoustic signals, and receives their reflections. The travel times of the reflections from the liquid surface and the fiducials are used to calculate changes in travel times during the measurement period, to estimate the speed of sound in the liquid, to correct for temperature-induced changes in the travel times, and to obtain a temperature-compensated change in travel time to the liquid surface. The temperature-compensated change in the height of the surface of the liquid during the measurement period is calculated using the product of the estimate of the speed of sound in the liquid and the temperature-compensated change in travel time to the liquid surface. The presence of a leak in a storage tank may be detected by converting the temperature-compensated change in the height of the surface of the liquid to temperature-compensated volume change using the known shape of the tank and liquid height, and then comparing the temperature-compensated volume change to a threshold value to determine whether the tank is leaking.

Temperature Compensated Methods For Detection Of Leaks In Pressurized Pipeline Systems Using Gas Controlled Apparatus

US Patent:
5163314, Nov 17, 1992
Filed:
Jan 3, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/817947
Inventors:
Joseph W. Maresca - Sunnyvale CA
James W. Starr - Bound Brook NJ
Christopher P. Wilson - La Honda CA
Assignee:
Vista Research, Inc. - Mountain View CA
International Classification:
G01M 326
US Classification:
73 405R
Abstract:
The gas pressure control apparatus and method for detection of leaks in pressurized pipelines disclosed herein measures thermally compensated leak rates. The apparatus uses a pressure vessel and gas pressure control system to precisely determine leak rates.

Method For Pretreating An Industrial Wastewater

US Patent:
5958256, Sep 28, 1999
Filed:
Jun 4, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/869131
Inventors:
William T. Ocel - The Woodlands TX
James L. Starr - Houston TX
Casimir J. Borowski - The Woodlands TX
Robert T. Short - Spring TX
Assignee:
Tetra Technologies, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
B01D 2126
US Classification:
210800
Abstract:
A method for cleaning industrial wastewater comprising pretreatment of the wastewater stream by intercepting and removing settleable solids prior to subjecting the stream to primary cleaning systems are disclosed. The method of pretreatment comprises pumping wastewater from a collecting reservoir or sewer through a hydrocyclone to separate the stream into an overflow of reduced solids content and an underflow of enhanced solids content. The overflow is directed to a holding tank or forebay of the primary cleaning system. The primary cleaning system comprises a gravity settler, a CPI (corrugated plate interceptor) system or API (American Petroleum Institute) separator for example. The gravity settler is operated to obtain an effluent essentially free of settleable solids and a sludge stream. The underflow with its enhanced solids content is screened to obtain a screened water stream and a sludge of screened solids which is directed to a collection container. The screened water stream continues on to the primary cleaning system.

Isomark Tattooing Devices

US Patent:
2012022, Aug 30, 2012
Filed:
Feb 24, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/404622
Inventors:
Robert D. Ahmann - Rochester MN, US
James A. Starr - Soquel CA, US
Broc T. Giffey - Rochester MN, US
Assignee:
MAYO FOUNDATION FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION AND RESEARCH - Rochester MN
International Classification:
A61B 17/34
US Classification:
606186
Abstract:
A device and method for marking a treatment isocenter on a patient's body. One embodiment includes a base including alignment indicia, a marker disposed over the base and positioned relative to the indicia for marking the isocenter on the patient's body and an actuator for actuating the marker and causing a mark indicating the isocenter to be made on the patient's body. The actuator can include a button and a spring coupled to the marker. Compressing the actuator causes the marker to travel through an ink well prior to piercing the patient's skin.

Simplified Apparatus For Detection Of Leaks In Pressurized Pipelines

US Patent:
5415033, May 16, 1995
Filed:
Dec 17, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/170092
Inventors:
Joseph W. Maresca - Sunnyvale CA
James W. Starr - Bound Brook NJ
Christopher Wilson - La Honda CA
Richard F. Wise - Manville NJ
Assignee:
Vista Research, Inc. - Mountain View CA
International Classification:
G01M 328
US Classification:
73 405R
Abstract:
An apparatus for detection of leaks in pressurized pipelines which utilizes a large pressure vessel and a small measurement vessel. The measurement vessel magnifies level changes during leak detection tests. The apparatus is connected to a pipeline through the measurement vessel. The entire system can be filled with liquid from the pipeline by opening a valve between the measurement and pressure vessels. Leak detection tests are conducted by measuring changes in volume with the measurement vessel over time while the pressure over the liquid in the pressure vessel and measurement vessel is maintained approximately constant. During tests, liquid communication between the measurement vessel and pressure vessel is prevented by closing the valve between them, but vapor communication between the vessels is permitted.
