Rapid Dialysis Cell And Method For Automated Instrumentation

US Patent:
6395233, May 28, 2002
Filed:
Jan 3, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/476187
Inventors:
Ronald N. Diamond - Anaheim Hills CA
William A. Stark - Costa Mesa CA
Assignee:
Quest Diagnostics Investments, Inc. - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
B01D 6300
US Classification:
422101, 210474, 210454, 21032184, 21032178
Abstract:
An improved dialysis cell and method for using the same to achieve shorter dialysis times wherein the two dialysis solutions used in the dialysis are brought into greater mutual contact with a semipermeable membrane, requiring the use of a smaller volume of dialysis. Because the dialysis cell is substantially rigid and in the shape of a test tube it can be used with an automated pipettor.

Dual Injector For Chemiluminescence Immunoanalyzing System

US Patent:
6056923, May 2, 2000
Filed:
Jun 25, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/882414
Inventors:
Ronald N Diamond - Anaheim Hills CA
Michael Otter - Dana Point CA
Thomas Sheng-Shyong Hu - Rancho Santa Margarita CA
William A Stark - Costa Mesa CA
Assignee:
CLMP, Inc. - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
G01N 3510
US Classification:
422100
Abstract:
A dual injector for an automated immunoassay instrument is provided which allows the sequential detection of two different chemiluminescence labels within one instrument. The injector has four carefully designed orifices. The orifices are designed to work in two pairs. Orifices one and two can be used to inject trigger reagents A and B which can trigger a chemiluminescent reaction, such as acridinium. Orifices three and four can inject trigger reagents C and D for triggering a chemiluminescent reaction, such as luminol. The two pairs can be used in a sequential manner to generate signals in the wells of a cuvette. Thus, it is possible to run both acridinium and luminol based assays on one instrument.

Apparatus For Assembling A Permanent Magnet Rotor

US Patent:
5144735, Sep 8, 1992
Filed:
Jun 26, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/721689
Inventors:
William H. Stark - Fort Wayne IN
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Fort Wayne TX
International Classification:
H02K 1502
US Classification:
29732
Abstract:
A permanent magnet rotor for an electronically commutated motor (ECM) has a core, a plurality of magnetizable elements spaced around the core, and a thin-walled retaining shell which has been stretched around the core and magnetizable elements to hold the elements in position. The rotor is amde by an inventive method which involves axially aligning the core and surrounding magnetizable elements with the retaining shell, and cold-pressing the retaining shell over the core and elements to sandwich the elements between the shell and core. The core and magnetizable elements serve as a mandrel about which the shell is reformed in a cold working operation. Other aspects of the invention include the fixturing apparatus used to align the core and magnetizable elements with the retaining shell, and apparatus which is used to evenly space the magnetizable elements around the core and hold the elements in position during at least a portion of the cold-pressing operation. Additional features of certain embodiments of the rotor of the present invention include end plates axially disposed adjacent the ends of the rotor core and magnetizable elements, and the use of adhesives between the core and magnetizable elements and/or the ends of the core and magnetizable elements and the end plates.

Tablet Dispensing

US Patent:
4980292, Dec 25, 1990
Filed:
Dec 17, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/943819
Inventors:
Lawrence E. Elbert - Huntington Beach CA
William A. Stark - Costa Mesa CA
Assignee:
Baxter International Inc. - Deerfield IL
International Classification:
C12M 136
C12M 134
US Classification:
435289
Abstract:
A unique method and apparatus for dispensing tablets having particular application in the clinical analysis of biological samples. A series of containers are advanced past a plurality of processing stations, one of which is a table dispenser in turn. The processing stations are selectively activated by a controller. A sensor is associated with the tablet dispenser and is arranged to detect whether a tablet has actually entered a container. The sensor is activated only when the tablet dispenser is activated. The controller is responsive to the sensor in dependence upon the condition sensed by the sensor.

Interactive Adaptive Inference System

US Patent:
5068814, Nov 26, 1991
Filed:
Nov 7, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/433612
Inventors:
William D. Stark - Ithaca NY
Gregory C. Prestas - Candor NY
Assignee:
Array Analysis, Inc. - Ithaca NY
International Classification:
G05B 1902
G01K 3128
US Classification:
364580
Abstract:
A human interactive adaptive inference system for testing electric or electronic devices or assemblies. The system includes a testing mechanism for performing position-dependent, time-ordered tests upon electrical or electronic devices or assemblies. The testing mechanism provides a test data array. The testing mechanism has manually provided test parameters and is adapted to operate under at least one of a plurality of operating modes. A reference array is also provided to contain acceptable data for comparison with test data. A reference comparator is connected to the test data array and to the reference array for providing a diagnostic analysis of the electrical or electronic device or assemblies.

Purging System

US Patent:
4270564, Jun 2, 1981
Filed:
Jul 24, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/927372
Inventors:
Wayne E. Blackburn - Irvine CA
Max D. Liston - Irvine CA
William A. Stark - Costa Mesa CA
Assignee:
Liston Scientific Corp. - Newport Beach CA
International Classification:
A61B 508
US Classification:
137240
Abstract:
There is disclosed a purging system for removing foreign matter from a fluid conducting conduit in which a sensor detects the presence of the foreign matter and produces an electrical signal which activates a timer which, in turn, connects a pump to the conduit for a given time duration to purge the conduit of the foreign matter. A counter also maybe connected to periodically activate the timer and purge the conduit, whether or not the sensor has detected foreign matter.
